First Run of 2025: Brotha/Sista Run

COVID- 19, “ The Rona Era”

And just like that, it’s a new year. A lot has happened since the last run of 2024. My Iowan turned 60, of course we had to celebrate. Then we spent 10 days in Iowa- a couple of days in Sioux City and then Fort Dodge. While I was gone, I did not run but I walked a lot. I walked to Loomis Park and visited the painted Silos a couple of times. It was cold and snowy in the midwest. We came back for a couple of days and then off to Las Vegas and Southern Utah for seven days to start off the New Year. No running but I packed my running shoes. We did a lot of walking and hiking at Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

We came back on Tuesday night on January 7th to cold ass Boston weather. While we were gone the weather was in the high 40s and mid 50s. Of course it gets cold in the desert at night. Nothing compares to Boston weather. This week, I’m been adjusting back. The new semester starts on Monday so I need to get ready. I had one PT appointment this week too. My PT folks, think I’ve plateau with my right knee and suggest I see my doctor and get an MRI. My leg is a lot stronger and better than it was three months ago but I still don’t have a full range to bend my knee. I have an appointment in 3 weeks to see the doctor. Getting shit done.

So Saturday is the first Brother/Sister run of the month. Every second Saturday. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to try to run and see some of my running peeps. It was a warm 35 degrees and it was snowing. The snow was not sticking. I was there early 7:10a.m. to run with KB before everyone came at 8a.m.

The goal, 5k. I felt like I was running/limping. I trying to run with small strides and then I tried with larger strides. It was just wonky. A couple of times I stopped to walk. I think I may need to go back to doing intervals for a while. Just the “ running movement” was good to get my knee use to that movement.

I met KB at the 1.5 mile mark. Then we did intervals back for a 5k. Once everyone showed up, we all did pre running exercises. There was a lot of hugs, love, and Happy New Years. It was so good to see familiar faces. Happy moment.

After the warm up drills and announcements the ladies and I did a 2 mile walk. The other options were for a 5k and 5 miler. KB, Angela, and I power walked in the snow. It was good to chat and catch up with them too. I know this will be my recovery year. Less running for me. Especially if I need to have a procedure done to my knee. I need to get to be strong and healthy. This girl has 38 more half marathons to run by 55.

It was such a great morning and I glad run a bit. We’ll see how things go on Tuesday for Pacing at the Reggie Indoor Track.
