Exploring and running for Ahmaud Arbery
The era of WTF
Normally I would do a long run on Saturday. I waited to run on Sunday. Sunday, Feb.23rd is the day that Ahmaud Arbery was killed for running while black. Five years ago today. This black was running and exploring in Georgia, when three white men thought he was suspicious and took the law in their own hands to chase him and and kill him.
Black bodies have always been seen as a threat. I think about that all the time when I run. Do people, white people think I belong in the space or I am a space invader. When I ran I have to think about my own protection and safety. That is the reality.
Today, I ran through downtown Boston exploring all the art, nature, and streets. It was early enough on a Sunday morning that it was quiet. I actually enjoyed the winter art, historical monuments that I love, and taking in the winter wonderland of the frozen pond.
Bonus, it was warm out. Warm being 38 degrees- above freezing temps.
Running and exploring is something that brings me joy. Black joy is a form of resistance. I found joy in my run, despite my wobbly knee. My goal was to run a 10k. I5.50 miles is what I put on the pavement. Still winning.
5.50 miles in 1 hour and 10 mins.
