Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

COVID-19, The Rona Era

Today is MLK day. To honor him and do a day of service, I ran with Black Men Run today. Our BMR Boston brothas have a MLK day of service. They run and do community work. This year, they were donating food to the Refrigerators that are in Cambridge. I did not know about the Fridge’s.

We all meet at Marathon Sports in Cambridge before running with backpacks of food to drop off at the Fridge’s. To be honest I did not get the assignment. I wanted to do something on MLK day and I saw they had an event and I went. I didn’t fully read the flyer. Plus it snowed last night. This morning it was still yucky out and windy AF. I think many folks opted to stay home. I was the only person from BGR representing.

When I got to Marathon Sports, I ran into a gang of Turkeys. These big Turkeys were taking over the quiet streets. I thought how symbolic Turkey gang and a gang member was being inaugurated into the White House today. Just saying.

Slowly, the men started to come. It was great to see so many wonderful faces. I appreciate the men bringing extra bookbags and food for people who did not bring anything…..like me. We had an option of 1 mile, 3 mile, or 5 mile. Since I ran 4 miles on Saturday, I went for the 1 mile. I was not alone.

There are several of the men training for Boston and 26.2 True Marathon. Plus the sidewalks were still a bit slick, I do not need to fall.

It was a good morning. My group power walked a mile and dropped off food. .

Afterwards, we had Crepes waiting for us. Little Crepes Cafe is a black owned business with amazing crepes. On MLK day, it was important to support black owned businesses. We had savory and sweet crepes . I’m so happy for the fellowship of my black and brown running community. And runners who are mindful around justice and equity.
