Super Sunday, Race Cancer Day
COVID-19, “The Rona Era”
There is going to be 12 inches of snow falling down today, after 11 a.m. It’s Sunday and I’m tired. My thoughts of an early morning run did not happen. Sleep was more important. When I got up, it was 8 a.m. Way late for me. It’s ok, I’m being patience and gentle with myself. Today is Super Sunday, Race Cancer Day Sunday. I year ago, 2020, this was the last race I ran in. No body knew this would be the last race, for anybody. A year ago, I was trying to get my legs and body ready to run the last four half marathons and states on my 50 state journey. At that time, I had start seeing an acupuncturist because my knee pain was so great. I think I had started also going to physical therapy. My first year half marathon of last year was going to be in April, and I refuse to let this pain stop me. Later on I found out that I had hoffa fat pad impingement. That, I thought was the worst thing ever. Boy, how wrong was I. I remember running/walking this race. It is a 5mile or 5k race. I didn’t think I could do 5 miles. I ran/walked the 5k in 41 minutes. Which is slow for me. I still had pain. Not as much as I had the month before, but I wasn’t 100%.
Fast forward a year of COVID, races cancelled, and finding out that I have stage zero breast cancer later. Having Hoffa Fat Pad is not so bad. I signed up for the virtual Super Sunday race. The only virtual race that I’ve signed up for this year. My leg is stronger and I feel physically better than last year. I wanted to prove this to myself and support cancer research , since now I personally will benefit from it. I’m not a fan of cancer personally because it took my mom away from me. This is now a new level of experience.
I actually ran the regular route of the race, with a slight detour because I got lost a bit. I ran 5.11 miles in 53 minutes. Big difference from last year.
And because Black Lives always matter not only during black history month but every month and every day, I was reminded of this during my run. Which made me very happy.
I ran through Cambridge and Somerville and back to Cambridge again. Most of the people I saw besides a few runners and walker, were people in line waiting to get breakfast or pastry items from the cafes and bakery.
