Last 10 miler before State #50
COVID-19, “ The Rona Era”
This is memorial day weekend and everyone is out. I decided to run 10 miles around castle island and carson beach. The last time I ran 10 miles was for the Big Sur Marathon on April 30th. It was 10 miles plus 16.2 additional miles.
The weather is going to be in the 80s. I had to get an early run in before it got hot. At 6:15a.m. it was already 58 degrees and my ass was sweating. I parked in the sea port area to start the run towards Castle Island which is about a mile away. This gave me the opportunity to test out my new shoes too.
The sky was blue, the sun was out, and there was a light breeze. As I ran I realized that I didn’t have enough gas in my tank to run. Body felt great but I had low energy. I thought I need to get a couple of miles in to get my body warmed up. I even brought my hydration vest because I knew I would need water on such a warm day.
My legs felt a bit heavy but I kept on running. When I reached the 5 mile marker on my watch, I turned around. On my way back, I ran into one of the heartbreakers on team red. We hugged and chatted for a bit. Then I decided to eat some GU that I brought with me. OMG. Difference as night and day. I had more energy and I could keep on going. That just reaffirmed that I need better hydration and nutrition.
This morning along the island beach it was buzzing before 9 a.m. I saw runners, bikers, walkers, fishermen, men chilling with their cigars, folks already out with their chairs and picnic gear. It was booming today.
My first 5 miles: 53:35 at 10:43 pace. Second 5 miles- 53:39 at 10:50min pace. Not bad with all things considering. I feel good about the last state half marathon. This was a good last run in the city.
