Hello 2023!!
COVID-19, “ The Rona Era”
This is my 9th year of my “New” New Year’s Day tradition of a 5k or 10k to kick off the start of a new year. Since my mom passed, I’ve been trying to find a new tradition for the holidays. Running on Jan 1st was of those traditions. For many years, I ran this ran alone. As I became involved with Black Girls Runs and the running community I would run with familiar faces. Normally, I would run then go to my friends’ Beverlys house for a traditional Southern/African American New Year’s Day meal.
This year. It was 54 degrees out. The race started at 11 a.m., instead of 9 a.m., and there were free bloody marys, Mimosas, and bowling afterwards. The pandemic changed a lot of things.
I did not go to this race alone this year. My Iowan came with me to the race. He is not one for getting up early. Then I met up with four of my BGR sole sistas. It was great to see them on the course. I actually used two of them as my pacers to keep me moving.
Afterwards, we all hung out, had free pizza, bloody marys, and mimosas. It was so nice and fun.
I like the New Year, running tradition that I have started for me. I feel strong, good, and accomplished afterwards instead of sad of depressed. Today was a good day
