Last Track Workout of Spring

Last Track Workout of Spring

I’ve said this and I’ll say this again, I am a winter runner. Runner is warm/hot weather doesn’t work for me. Today it was 66 degrees out and muggy as all get out, at 6:30a.m. Today there was over 100 people for the trackworkout with Heartbreakers running club. I thought it was funny and I know the reasons why I was the only black woman running with the group this morning. There was one black man, a sprinkle- less than 10 Asian men and women who ran. When you count, it’s not diverse. I know it has to do with access: location and time of day( people have to work). There was such a difference from this group and the Road to Wellness training group I ran with on Saturday.

This is when social class comes into action in running spaces. It’s in Cambridge and many of the participants biked to the track. The kind of jobs they have allow them to be at the track until 7:45a.m. I noticed the over priced lululemon that people had on. I have had conversations with many people and they have masters and Ph.d’s who run. These folks represent one kind of runner. Looking around, I thought, running is so white and this seems like an unequal space.
