Phrase III of Road to Wellness Training
COVID-19, “The Rona Era”
Today starts phrase III of Road to Wellness 5k training. This is the last phrase of training before the 5k on September 11th. I remember in June when we started Phrase I and now it’s August and Phrase III. For the rest of this Phrase we will be at Dimock center. We had a chance to run and practice on the race course. I believe the last time I ran this course was before COVID. It might have been 2019, my last Road to Wellness race. Last year, we ran virtually. We ran in Franklin Park for the virtual Road to Wellness 5k. I guess it has been over a year since I was on the course.
Today was my re introduction to the course. As always, we had a really good turn out today for training. This is my first run post radiation. I decided to run with coach Y and the runners. We were just going to pace ourselves and feel out the course.
I’m all in. The only downfall was the heat was coming out. We didn’t start running until after 9 a.m. Even through there was a map, I didn’t take a picture. I know the route. If I was the last person in the run group, I would still know how to find my way back to the Dimock Center. I was just going to take my time and try not to overheat myself.
I ran with Bryan and meet Pete from How was your run today podcast. Running with and talking to while running Bryan made the time go by face. We chatted about our experience running( both of us are late to running), where we are from, his podcast, and my research and book project. I was able to talk while breathing and running. Since I run alone in the a.m. I don’t get a chance to talk to anyone. Before it happened, I knew when the hills would come and how to prepare for them.
We had a great run and two 30 second walking break with Coach Y, which made us much appreciate the brief pause before continuing running. I knew the mile markers spots. When my map my run app let me know it had been a mile, I knew mile 2 would be at Malcolm X’s house. 2.5. marker is around MLK blvd., the last uphill run before running down hill then back up another hill to the finish line.
Bryan and I finished strong together when crossing the “ speed bump” finishing line.
