Boston 10k for Women
COVID-19 ‘The Rona Era”
Today is the day I picked to run the Boston 10k for Women virtual race. The only reason I signed up to do this virtual race, because I strongly dislike them, is to support Black Girls Run -Boston. We were picked to be one of the four charity organizations for this race. We wanted the monies to go to Sole Train, an organization that helps urban youth to start running and encourages self esteem, leadership, and community.
BGR-Boston picked the 11th as the day for our ladies to get together for the virtual race. We created a team so members could participate. My plan for the day was to run early, then from 8-10a.m. at Franklin Park, we would have the ladies run, socially distancing together.
This morning, I wanted to run the normal route of the Boston 10k for Women, if it was not virtual. I started at the Boston Commons at 5:50 a.m. to start the run. I passed by the Public Gardens and run through the Backbay to cross over to Mass Ave and run down and back on Memorial Drive before crossing back over on Mass Ave to run through the Backbay to end up running around the Public Gardens for the finish.
It was dark out. I’m so glad I had my headlight on. When I ran over on memorial drive I saw three women running, all with some type of reflective gear running as well. I wondered if they were doing the virtual 10k or if it was their normal run route on a Sunday.
I did stop for a bit to see the reflection of the city lights and geese with their asses up in the air. Still not sure what that is all about.
My 10k time was better than yesterday. I finished 6.12 miles in 1:02:28 at a 10:12 min/mil pace. I want to slowly get back to running a 10k in under an hour. If I can get there an remain healthy and strong with my knees great, if I can’t then I’m completely ok.
After I finished running, I promised my ambassador that I would go to Franklin Park to help set up for the 10k that some of our members were participating in today. By the time I arrived at 7:17, my girl Katonya had everything finished. She had a crew of folks there to help.
We had a good number of ladies show up, as well as Girls on the Run rep, Fearless 261, and Soul Train.
My job was to watch the table for a bit while the ladies ran.
Overall it was a great 10k a.m. morning to run and support black women running.
