Southern Running

Southern Running

Friday am run was a hot 77 degree before 6am run. Normally I don't run before a half but this time is different. With the heat and humidity I wanted to get my body adjusted to the heat, breathing, motions, and overall feel in this kind of weather. I planned on running a 10k then I thought 3k would be better. In the end I ran 4.63 in 44:59. This is slower than my normal time for these miles but I wanted to be start.

Overall it wasn't bad but I made myself rain. LOL. This was only after 4 miles. The good thing, this is an urban run. At least on Sunday I will be in the cool and shade of the woods. We will see. On my run this morning, I saw runners. Mostly, well all men. White older men who were running. They all spoke to me. And while I race I got stares. Not looks but stares. I guess people aren't use to seeing a black person run. Especially a black women running since I was running in white space

After Florida, I'll have 2 more southern states to run in: North Carolina and Tennessee. While running, I'm reminded that I am in the south. Florida, especially central and northern Florida are very southern.

Fuel for Thought: If people leave the mouse compound they will see how Orlando is a big small town. They are starting to gentrify their city but its not on the scale of other cities I've seen.  Literally, crossing the train tracks you find the racial segregation of neighborhood space. There is a mixture of conservative and 45 supporters along with pride flags and the working poor and an art district that is growing.
